a passionate actor full of substance and soul

Constance was born in England and grew up traveling all over the world. She knew acting was for her since her debut at age three in Sleeping Beauty, as a tree. She continued to perform throughout middle and high school, winning several awards. She moved to New York City at age twenty and attended the American Musical Dramatic Academy. After graduation she starred in several theatrical productions and independent films.

She moved to New Hampshire in 2002 and has starred in productions all over the Seacoast ever since. Recent roles include Masha in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (lauded as "mesmerizing" and "nuanced") and the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz ("cadence, physicality and cackle were perfect"). She also recently appeared in a New Hampshire Lottery commercial. She is the 2023 winner of ArtPort's Best Actor in a Female Role in a Play for her roles as Evy in The Gingerbread Lady and Rosemary Muldoon in Outside Mullingar, and nominated for the NH Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Agnessa in The Garden of Z. Constance has directed and produced with her own production company, Fearon Productions, and recently added costume designer to her resume!

Favorite roles include The Traveler in Edward Tulane (New Hampshire Theatre Project), Nora in A Dollhouse, Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate, Marjorie in Extremities, Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (all at The Seacoast Repertory Theatre), Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Blanche Dubois in Streetcar, Lady Macbeth, Anna in Closer, Suzy in Wait Until Dark, and Vivian Bearing in Wit (all at The Players' Ring). She has been nominated several times and is the winner of Spotlight Award for her portrayal of Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire. Constance played a teacher in the PSA Stand Up and Step Forward by 03801 Productions, which won 3 Silver Telly Awards and 3 New England Emmys. She loves to run, read, write poetry, travel and have good conversations with friends over good coffee.

Theatre Reviews

The Garden of Z

"Witman fleshes out Agnessa with an intriguing persona. Her take is somewhere between the frail romantic floating on her dreams, and a gritty survivor; it's another piece of theater magic."

Outside Mullingar

"Then there's Witman. Well. Incredible. Rosemary is the oddest, most intense and strong role of the lot, and Witman owns it. Hard to imagine anyone putting a more definitive stamp on this character. This is a powerful portrayal that will linger large and long in your memory."

The Gingerbread Lady

"It's hard to like Evy, but Witman's performance is another whole other story. Witman masters the unlikeable woman, no softening, no sympathy, just bare, bold authenticity. It's a strong portrayal."

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

"Constance Witman as Traveler,- perform numerous characters. Giving marked and believable definition to the multiple roles, great performances all. Still, Witman is a standout, boggling with her distinct, rich transformations."

A Doll's House

"Constance Witman's Nora speaks volumes to personal, family, community and cultural conflict, and does so perfectly in this detailed representation. Witman moves from bubblehead trinket to awakened woman in a single bite of a bitter apple. Nora's transition is a long time coming. When it occurs, the move is so sudden you feel the reverberation of a crumbling, carefully crafted mindset. That and more is there in Witman's face, first as she flits about, then worries, connives and eventually emerges aware and real. It's an outstanding, compelling performance."

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

"Sears and Witman wear George and Martha like second skins, both mastering their characters' external hostilities and internal complexities. The chemistry between them and the tensions/relationships they build with the younger couple are real. Sears moves effortlessly between George's many faces, while Witman is the mistress with the acerbic bite. True to Martha's character, Witman demands all eyes on her, and each savvy, weighted move has us complying."

Streetcar Named Desire

"Witman embodies Blanche. Her nuanced performance allows the complexities beneath the painted, shadowed, veneer to ripple and peek through. Those that emerge burst forth like wild animals on a leash, cruel or insane but kept in check till the tether finally snaps. The lady is as the southerners say "madder than a peach orchard boar," and Witman makes it so."

Extremities

"Constance Witman is a standout as Marjorie. The character's range of emotions is broad, and Witman gives us a taste of them all – fear, anger, rage, cruelty, confusion – whatever the moment calls for."

The Graduate

"Mrs. Robinson is the kind of role that Constance Witman excels at. Witman's Robinson is a shark, an eating machine with no scruples, chilling and efficient at what she does. She nails the role. Witman makes no attempt at sympathy, or to humanize or lighten this character in any way. She's simply a cold-blooded, predatory beast and survivor that circles and strikes at will. It's a delicious performance."

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

"It's this duality of character which Witman evinces so beautifully;  her Maggie is in conflict with the woman she is, the woman she wants to be, and with the world she longs for outside of herself.  Witman gives us a Maggie born of strife, used to fighting for what she wants; a creature utterly compelling in her fear and fearlessness.  We want Maggie to succeed- but we fear what may come when she gets what she wants."

Macbeth

"Constance Witman is outstanding as Lady Macbeth, the Bard's language rolls off her tongue as if everyday speech. Every move and line is flawless. You simply never "see" this woman act."

Wait Until Dark

"Constance Witman's Susy is both strong and vulnerable. The wife's blindness is relatively new. She stumbles some, occasionally tests tentatively with a foot or a hand even in her home. Susy is also bright and observant, and her inability to see has honed her listening skills. It's all there in Witman's performance: The physical and psychological make-up, the vulnerability and grit. It's a strong performance from an actress we've come to expect it from."

Testimonials & Directing Reviews

I was so lucky to have Constance’s guidance through an audition monologue. It had been so long since I’ve played with a new monologue so I was especially nervous. Constance made me feel so comfortable and was so helpful in creating a space to play and bring forward what was going to be my best for my audition!! She’s so passionate about acting and so fantastically talented it was a joy to work through my piece with her!! I truly owe what I think to be my best audition yet to Constance’s guidance and her passion for acting!  ~Molly Scott, Actress

Constance is one of those rare directors that, thanks to her absolutely potent interpersonal skills, her own innate brilliance as an actor, and clear-sightedness to the heart of a good story, instills the utmost confidence in her actors. Confidence not only in her directing talent, but self-confidence for the actors as well. I know this because I had the very good fortune of being one of those actors some years back (though I've acted alongside her more recently, which is a different and equally magical experience, anyone who has seen her work will attest). Working in a room with Constance, I feel so seen and heard. She is collaborative and intensely supportive of her actors- she nurtures an actor's drive to discover new things, while imparting direction that elevates the story. She is completely present in the creative process- she is also clear when sharing direction or ideas. I have worked with directors who spoke ambiguously, who didn't have genuine interest in their actors' ideas- I remember leaving rehearsals with them with my shoulders slumped. But with Constance, an actor will feel empowered to do their best work. I was so, so excited to hear the amazing audience reaction to the fruits of our labor, and I distinctly hope to be directed by her again. The world needs more directors like her- brilliant, intuitive, savvy, empathetic, and inspiring.

~Ashley Risteen, Actress

As a director, Miss Witman brings decades of experience to help create compelling and immersive experiences for the audience. Her direction is insightful and nuanced, truly capturing the heart of the play. She also has a knack for casting the perfect actors for the role and ability to communicate clearly and effectively to the cast and crew. Lastly, she's professional, dependable, punctual and a joy to work with. I would work with her again in a New York minute!

Don Goettler, DoGo Productions

One of the crucial qualities, maybe THE crucial quality, that I look for in a director is someone who knows what they want. Sounds straightforward but it isn’t always true. A director who knows who the characters are and what they want to see from them, while also allowing for collaboration and discoveries that stem from that original vision is, to me, the ideal directorial approach. When Constance directed me in ‘A Thousand Clowns’ she showed all of those traits and it was an incredibly rewarding experience for me on an artistic and personal level. I would be thrilled to work with her again as a director and would not hesitate to recommend any actor do the same. ~Matthew Scofield, Actor & Writer

Director Constance Witman is a longtime respected actress, with some of her best work portraying dark characters. She brings that skill to bear here, and shows real promise for her newly chosen role.

 – Jeanné McCartin, Review for 'Mercy Street'

Director Constance Witman's triumph is the cast and the character design. Each role is distinct, knowable and oh so real. Together with the play's deft movement, wonderful little bits of stage business, her astute direction goes a long way in smoothing out the play's 40-year-old wrinkles.
